Winter Hair Problems Solved – Part 2 of 2

WINTER HAIR Q&A

Now that we’ve tackled the major winter hair issues in our previous post, what about those pesky little problems that keep you from looking your fashion best during the dark and dreary winter months? Try these quick tips to keep your winter self in the summer fashionista style you’ve become accustom to. A Q&A on some common but seldom addressed winter style issues

Knots and tangles everywhere “My hair knots and tangle on my bundled winter clothing”.

Wool and other rough weave fabrics are annoying and damaging to your hair. Hair gets caught up in the thicker weave causing friction and tangling. It is common to find a bit of breakage near the base of the back hairline in the months when you bundle up. A silk scarf against your hair helps, but the only way to avoid any damage at all is to keep your hair away from these types of fabrics.

What to do about hat hair “I love wearing hats but end up with horrible hat head”.

There are so many ways to resolve this. The trick is to select a hat that works with your hair type. If you have deliciously wild curls a toque will not only confine them but squish them flat. A less constricting hat works well with curls (i.e. fedora or loose beret). Toques do however, work well with hair that lays smooth. A bit of 2nd Day Clear Dry Shampoo sprayed on the inside of your hat helps with static.

To air dry or not to air dry“I air dry to prevent frizz, but just don’t have that kind of time”.

Air drying is less agitating to the hair but if you live in a colder climate it can be a bit more difficult to get out the door. Wash it the night before and twist it up in a loose knot (adding Dream Waves Beach Spray or Strictly Curls Curl Defining Lotion will help to bring out waves or curl). If you ‘must’ wash in the morning, speed up drying with a ‘hair towel’; the microfibers hold up to five times their weight in water and this efficiency helps to dry hair much quicker.

Lost that summer glow“Since summer ended, my hair has lost that sun-kissed glow”.

We all miss our summer hair, but there is a way to keep it that is both simple and quick. Try Easy-Lites Instant Highlighting Spray; you just spray and flat iron. In the winter, a few soft highlights around the face or Ombre on the ends is just enough to remind you that summer will be back soon enough.

In a winter hair style rut “Towards the later winter months I become bored with my look”.

The dark winter months seem to bring out the need for change with stronger urgency. The lack of moisture makes it hard to keep a good curl or add volume. If you don’t want to change your cut, small changes in your products and styling will bring you out of your rut. For example, if curly try a product that has more curl enhancing properties; if your hair is straight add some volume and texture; or try hot rollers which have a firmer hold during the winter months. Recommended: Strictly Curls Curl Booster or Dream Waves Beach Spray for texture.

Winter Hair Problems Solved – Part 1 of 2

THE BIG HAIR CHILL

Snowflakes, hot chocolate and cozy little fires give this season its comfy charm; but as winter moves in and the air gets drier it begins to show in your hair and scalp. Cooler months and lack of moisture make it easy for any ice princess to suffer from dryness and some very chilling hair issues – split ends, breakage, static and frizz, among other things.

Fear not winter goddesses; Marc Anthony shares his dry hair solutions for a long winter at its beautified best.

DRY HAIR & SCALP

Winter’s lack of moisture can cause a dry, flaky scalp and as your scalp dries out so does your hair. The air around you (inside and out) also lacks moisture and as a result sucks it out of anywhere it can find it, including your hair. Hair becomes flatter and also begins to lack shine.

  • Know your flakes: Be mindful of a dry scalp vs. dandruff. Dry scalp is caused by dehydration, dry heat and poor products stripping the hair, resulting in white flakes. Dandruff is actually a fungal or bacterial infection of the scalp. The flakes or skin cell clusters are large at times, greasy or waxy and are yellow or gray in colour. Anti-fungal shampoos can be horribly drying to those who don’t actually have dandruff.
  • A winter cut: If you live in an exceptionally dry climate during the winter, speak to your stylist about tweaking your haircut as the lack of moisture makes your hair sit differently than it does in the more moist summer months.
  • Wash less:  Dare we say this? Shampoo less to keep your natural oils where they need to be. If you need a bit of a boost try a dry shampoo to trap excess oil and add a bit of body without drying your hair out. Recommended: 2nd Day Clear Dry Shampoo.
  • Sans sulfate: Since sulfate free shampoos are less drying and less irritating they are much better at all times, but more so when the weather is dry. They are also good for those sensitive to allergies or eczema. Recommended: Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Shampoo - Sulfate Free.
  • Moisture rich conditioner: Use a conditioner that not only conditions but adds moisture to help keep hair supple. Recommended: Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Conditioner.
  • Hydrate your style:  Hydrate as you style to give hair lasting moisture.Look for styling products with hydration properties. For both straight or curly styles we recommend bye.bye.Frizz Keratin Smoothing Blow Dry Cream.

SPLIT ENDS & BREAKAGE

There are so many more reasons to have split ends in the winter due to the ongoing moisture issue. Hair is more likely to be dry which leads to more splitting and breaking.

  • Quench those ends: The ends are the oldest part of your hair, the most fragile and the most likely place to break or split. Adding extra moisture on the ends is a good idea. A daily argan oil treatment is lightweight and penetrates easily to add moisture without feeling heavy or greasy. Recommended: Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Treatment.
  • Air dry inside: Though going outside with wet hair is not good for your hair, it is much worse if it ‘freezes’ since it is more likely to break. In winter prep your hair early enough to have it dry mostly naturally. Hot tools can dehydrate hair more than usual in dry weather.

STATIC & FLY-AWAYS

This issue comes back to moisture (surprise). Dry hair rubs together causing static electricity and – as fascinating as that is – it is not conducive to a good look. Those charged particles float around waiting to mess up a perfectly good blowout.

  • Moisture: Deep moisturizing helps to control static. Add a leave-in oil to your hair before putting on your hat. Recommended: Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Treatment.
  • Spray for static control: Dry shampoo sprayed lightly all over your hair or on the interior of your winter hat is also quite good at helping to control static. Recommended: 2nd Day Clear Dry Shampoo.

WINTER FRIZZ

It is important to avoid over-drying your hair at this time of the year. Summer frizz is caused by an abundance of moisture (humidity) that swells the cuticle keeping it open, but winter frizz is caused by a total lack of moisture.  When hair becomes overly dehydrated it becomes brittle causing the cuticle to become raised and appear frizzy.

  • Balance moisture:  Hydration is good for frizz. You need a shampoo, conditioner and styler that delivers moisture and that are gentle. This helps to not only nourish your hair but keeps the cuticle closed, resulting in less frizz and tangles. Overly conditioning your hair in the winter can leave it limper than ever, so the product you use should still be lightweight in order to maintain a nice level of body.  Recommended: bye.bye.Frizz Keratin Smoothing Shampoo, Conditioner and Blow Dry Cream.

Extreme Heat Hair Alert – Part 2 of 2

The Top Knot

Hot, humid, sticky weather… not the best beauty forecast. While part of you is thinking of surrendering your fashion look and just going with whatever hairstyle keeps you cool, the reality is that you have to find a way to at least look amazing while getting into work before your hair has a total meltdown.

A heat alert rule of thumb; as long as your hair is touching your skin you will manufacture more heat which will produce more frizz, so keep it up and off of your neck. Here is an idea that keeps the hair off of your neck for a much needed cool down.

GET THE LOOK:

  1. Ponytail: Gather hair into a high ponytail.  You want to have a bit of a dishevelled finish so don’t pull your hair super tight or smooth.
  2. Add texture: After you have secured it with an elastic, add a dash of Dream Waves Beach Spray to the pony; you want to add a bit of texture so that the hair’s natural movement is showcased. Use your fingers to move it through the hair.
  3. Add more texture: To add a bit more texture you can use your fingers to tease your hair; this adds dimension without a finished look. Hold the ponytail up and “rake” your fingers towards the base of the pony.  In essence your fingers are the brush. This will add texture.
  4. Bun it: Once this is finished take the ponytail and loosely wrap it around the base of the ponytail in a circular motion, adding bobby pins to hold it in as you go.

It’s the instant cool answer to the sweltering heat.

Extreme Heat Hair Alert – Part 1 of 2

The Braided Bun

Remember in the middle of that wicked cold snap a few months ago when you where thinking “bring on the heat!”  Who says you don’t get what you ask for.

There is just one rule in the extreme heat hair alert… keep it off of your neck!  As long as your hair is touching your skin you will manufacture more heat which will produce more frizz (we call this school of thought “fashion science”).

Here are a couple of ideas that keep you cool while looking hot.

GET THE LOOK:

Two modern ways to wear this bun: 1) low at the back or 2) high up (shorter haired hotties should go with the first bun).

  1. Add texture: Take freshly washed hair (keep it damp), spray it with Dream Waves Beach Spray for a bit of texture (this makes it easier to manipulate) and draw it into a ponytail. Wrap it tightly with a covered elastic which will help to keep your hair protected from breakage. You can smooth the hair with a bit of Moisture Gloss Daily Drops to give it high shine.
  2. Camouflage: Cover the elastic by taking a little section of hair, wrapping it around the elastic and pinning it after it is wrapped. This way it has a polished finish.
  3. Braid it: Braid the ponytail (a regular braid is fine for this) and if you want something a bit more exotic looking try fishtail braiding it before you pin it up. Once finished add another elastic on the end to stop it from unravelling, twist it around the base of the ponytail and pin in place.

Not only will this keep you fresh, it gives you “cool cred”!

URBAN CHIC

We love old school glamour and the scarf is a timeless classic way to get the look. It adds a bit of extra flair so that your hair looks ‘put together’, not ‘thrown together’, even on those pesky bad hair days. Marc Anthony shares an ‘Urban Chic’ way to incorporate a scarf into your spring and summer mane.

Perfect for hot summer days at work. This look works best with a bit of movement, so you’ll need to do a full blowout first.

The Hair

  • To get more fullness try Instantly Thick Hair Thickening Cream  or Salon Expert Volumizing Blowout Cream, which not only creates volume but also adds a ton of shine.
  • Use a round brush to get extra body as you blow dry, especially the root area.
  • Add a bit of waves at the ends with an extra large barrel curling iron.
  • Gently gather hair to the side and hold in place with a covered elastic band.

The Scarf

  • Fold the scarf into a loose 2” – 3” STRIP.
  • Hold the scarf over the elastic band and tie it tightly into a knot.
  • Create a bow to your liking, fluffing the bulb of the bow to your preferred size. Leave the tails hanging loosely.

EVENING OUT

We love old school glamour and the scarf is a timeless classic way to get the look. It adds a bit of extra flair so that your hair looks ‘put together’, not ‘thrown together’, even on those pesky bad hair days. Marc Anthony shares an ‘Evening Out’ way to incorporate a scarf into your spring and summer mane.

This elegant scarf technique will add some distinction to your evening up-do. The look definitely needs some curl.

The Hair

  • After blowing hair out spray Salon Expert Color Shine Hairspray and use a large barrel curling iron to curl hair all over.
  • Once hair is all curled gently run your fingers through with a bit of Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Treatment to add shine and break up the curls a bit.
  • Bobby pin hair up loosely; start at the sides and work to the back leaving the front for last.
  • Play with the front to pull curls back further or leave them towards the front.

The Scarf

  • Once hair is pinned up twist the scarf into a THIN ROPE.
  • Pin one end behind the ear (tucking it into the hair) and weave the other end in and out of your curly up-do.
  • Once finished pin the other end ensuring it is tucked in and hidden. With a few bobby pins look for loose pieces and secure them in.
  • Once you have the scarf firm you can go through with your fingers and tug slightly here and there to add some volume to the bits of scarf poking through.

BOHO HIPSTER

We love old school glamour and the scarf is a timeless classic way to get the look. It adds a bit of extra flair so that your hair looks ‘put together’, not ‘thrown together’, even on those pesky bad hair days. Marc Anthony shares a ‘Boho Hipster’ way to incorporate a scarf into your spring and summer mane.

Simple is best sometimes. Nothing adds to espadrilles and a summer frock like a scarf tied and left hanging. Whether hair is straight or waved this double knot will keep your hair out of your eyes while keeping all eyes on you.

The Hair

  • If going straight, make it as sleek as possible. Try a hot tools spray like Style Straight Iron Shine Flat Iron Spray to protect your tresses as you iron them out. You’ll also get so much shine that the sun will need shades.
  • If you prefer a more relaxed summer wave, use a texturizing spray like Dream Waves Beach Spray. Even if your hair is naturally straight it will amplify it into a fresh beachy texture, which works so well with this hipster look.

The Scarf

  • Fold the scarf lengthwise over and over into a 2” – 3” STRIP.
  • Gently pull hair up and secure it with a wide jaw clip to keep it out of the way while you tie the scarf.
  • Tie the scarf ensuring the double knot is on the left or right allowing the ‘ribbons’ to hang over the shoulder.
  • We suggest two bobby pins to secure the scarf – one on each side behind the ears – to help keep this look without worrying about your band sliding off.

SAIL AWAY

We love old school glamour and the scarf is a timeless classic way to get the look. It adds a bit of extra flair so that your hair looks ‘put together’, not ‘thrown together’, even on those pesky bad hair days. Marc Anthony shares a ‘Sail Away’ way to incorporate a scarf into your spring and summer mane.

This classic look can work at the beach or as you dance the night away under the summer stars. To keep it looking new we suggest not tying it overly tight – loose works best for this.

The Hair

The Scarf

  • Fold the scarf over into a TRIANGLE and place it where you would like it to sit on your head.
  • Once you are happy with the placement use two large clips and pin the scarf where it sits best so you can fuss with the knot without it moving the scarf.
  • Once satisfied with the knot remove the clips and leave the ends down and loose. Voila mademoiselle le pirate.

CITY ROMANCE

We love old school glamour and the scarf is a timeless classic way to get the look. It adds a bit of extra flair so that your hair looks ‘put together’, not ‘thrown together’, even on those pesky bad hair days. Marc Anthony shares a ‘City Romance way to incorporate a scarf into your spring and summer mane.

A pretty way to stay fresh this summer. It is practical, cool and visually pretty. It works so well with a fringe, but can look equally pretty with hair all pulled back off the face.

The Hair

  • This look works for all hair types. If you like a smooth finish blow hair out with a round brush and bye.bye.Frizz Blow Dry Cream.
  • If you prefer to stay curly, loosen the curls so that when pulled back it still creates a soft look. Apply Blow Dry Cream and stretch out the curls with your fingers as you apply heat with a blow dryer.
  • Pull hair back into a ponytail and twist into a tight knot, finishing the top of your hair with some Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Treatment for a bit of sheen.

The Scarf

  • Fold the scarf over in an ACCORDIAN like manner.
  • Bobby pin one end against the knot and continue to pin at random intervals until you reach the end. Fluff as needed.
